Proud mining enterprises in Russia form the basic industry of the entire economy. The development of enterprises brings the country a stable position and independence from foreign markets.

world ranking

Historically, Russia has been rich in mineral resources. Thanks to the development of mineral resources, the country occupies a leading position in the world market. Large reserves do not always mean unequivocal leadership, for example, the Russian Federation has an overwhelming leadership in the world ranking in terms of iron ore reserves, but their iron content is low. The same situation is with titanium, tin, tungsten and many other metal-containing minerals.

Differ from general position Norilsk fields, where the quality of the extracted raw materials is characterized by high rates. Today, large mining enterprises of Russia operate there, where they develop raw materials for the production of nickel (20% of the world market), cobalt (10%), copper (3%). A significant amount of platinum, tellurium, and palladium is supplied to the world market from the Norilsk mines. According to experts, the Norilsk reserves will last for 30 years.

Russia produces 48 types of mineral raw materials, which makes it the absolute leader among 166 mining countries. Most of the countries participating in the market operate with a more modest list - up to 10 types of minerals. The share of the Russian mining industry in world production is about 10%, which allows it to occupy the third position in the ranking.

Industry issues

The main problem of mining in Russia is the lack of systematic exploration. All state projects in this direction have been discontinued since 1966. Modern system subsoil use by private developers does not stimulate research. As a result, the threat to the entire industry is growing. Most of the known deposits are already on the verge of depletion of reserves, and new ones are not being discovered and there is no planned scientific exploration of the subsoil.

This situation leads to the dependence of metallurgical plants on external supplies. Aluminum production at domestic enterprises is directly dependent on the components. Bauxite and alumina are required for metal production, and their production is gradually declining. The share of own bauxite is 5-6 million tons per year, alumina - up to 2.9 tons per year, this is not enough for production capacity. The amount of purchased raw materials reaches 5.3 million tons.

In addition to insufficient exploration of the subsoil, there is the problem of abandoned deposits, in the development of which no investment is being made. The total copper reserves in Russia are estimated at 100 million tons. The largest deposit of this metal is located in Eastern Siberia. According to the data, it contains about 200 tons of raw materials, but no one deals with them. Others are in development large deposits(Oktyabrskoye, Gayskoye, Talnakhskoye), where reserves are coming to an end.

There are up to 10 thousand tons of gold in the bowels of Russia, but the situation in the gold mining industry follows the general trends. Industrial development is carried out at and in Sukhoi Log (1,500 tons of metal per year). The share accounts for most of the gold mining (up to 58%). Development and exploration of new deposits is not conducted.

The basis of the country's economy

Mining enterprises in Russia are the main base that forms the country's budget. The contribution to the GDP is 60-70%, the increase in the export of raw materials and finished products ensures the filling of the stabilization fund of the economy and the state reserves. The mining industry is a complex of industries that includes:

  • Extraction of mineral and energy raw materials (oil, gas, peat, uranium, coal, etc.).
  • Extraction of ore of ferrous and other metals (iron ore, chromite, vanadium, molybdenum, etc.).
  • Mining of non-ferrous metal ore (copper, tin, lead, zinc, nickel, etc.).
  • Extraction of mining and chemical raw materials (apatite, potassium salts, phosphates, etc.).
  • Extraction of industrial raw materials for the needs of various industries (graphite, asbestos, chalk, limestone, clay, granite, etc.).
  • Extraction of precious, semi-precious, ornamental stones (diamonds, gems, etc.).
  • Hydromineral direction (groundwater).

Mining enterprises in Russia are formed at the site of the development of minerals. For full-fledged work and reduction of the cost part, a complex of related enterprises is usually built. Deposits of metal ores are accompanied by enrichment plants, metallurgical plants and a complex of infrastructure facilities, including settlements for workers, road junctions, energy complexes to ensure the operation of industrial enterprises.

Work in the major industry the country's economy is always there. Many seek to get into the mining enterprises of Russia. Vacancies are almost always open for drivers of trucks and specialized vehicles, general workers, there is a constant shortage of highly qualified welders. The list of vacancies is constantly updated, which gives a chance to all candidates to get the desired position.

The main part of the enterprises is concentrated in the northern regions of Russia, where the working conditions are very difficult. Employers, in addition to high wages, offer a special schedule - shift method work. The shift can stretch from 15 days to six months, after which the employee receives full pay for the entire time. Those who have already worked in this mode respond positively to both the experience gained and the salary.

As you know, the resource-extracting industry in Russia is currently one of the most developed and brings a lot of money to the country's budget. Of course, the leading position among such industries is occupied by the oil industry, however, gold mining is one of the most important sources of government funding.

In 1995, the Union of Gold Producers was formed, the purpose of which is to develop and implement measures aimed at developing the gold mining industry in Russia. LNG plant in Russia (Photo: Vladimir Smirnov / TASS)

A joint venture between Italy's Saipem and Turkey's Renaissance signed a €2.2 billion contract with NOVATEK's subsidiary Arctic LNG-2 for the design and construction of a second liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on the Gydan Peninsula in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. This is stated in the message Saipem.

This plant will consist of three production lines for the production of 6.6 million tons of LNG each, for a total of 19.8 million tons of LNG. It is the contractor's responsibility to design and construct concrete gravity-type platforms (i.e., supported on the bottom by their own weight and the connections of the lower part of the platform to the ground) to accommodate these three lines. The gravity platforms will be built at the shipyard in Murmansk, which is being built by NOVATEK, and then towed and installed at Gydan.

Arctic LNG-2 will be NOVATEK's second LNG plant after Yamal LNG, which was at full capacity (16.5 million tons of LNG per year) last week. The cost of the project amounted to $27 billion. At that time, Leonid Mikhelson, the chairman of the board and the largest co-owner of NOVATEK, said that the company had become the largest LNG plant in Russia, the total share of which is about 5% of the global liquefied gas market.

The new plant will produce LNG at the Utrenneye field on the Gydan Peninsula. On September 18, NOVATEK announced the discovery of deposits at this field with reserves of about 405 billion cubic meters. m, which will increase the total reserves to 2 trillion cubic meters. m of gas. It is assumed that the investment decision on this project will be made in 2019, and the plant itself will be launched in 2022.

The award of the contract to build Arctic LNG-2 demonstrates how Saipem is fully integrated into the transition to a reliable energy supply and another success of the company in the high value-added LNG sector, said Saipem CEO Stefano Kao (his words are quoted in the message). In addition, this contract strengthens Saipem's presence in Russia, he added. RBC sent a request to a NOVATEK representative.

In May 2018, the French Total, which already owns shares in NOVATEK and Yamal LNG, on the purchase of 10% of Arctic LNG-2 and an option for another 5%, based on a project valuation of $ 25.5 billion on December 17, that " The Arctic LNG-2 was headed by Oleg Karpushin, who previously headed Salym Petroleum, a joint venture between Shell and Gazprom Neft, and then was Executive Vice President for Production, Exploration and Oilfield Services of the Kazakh KazMunayGas.
