A month and a half ago, a branch of the American company Mary Kay officially opened in Minsk, and in early September, a celebration was held at the Palace of the Republic, where everyone could get acquainted with the products of this brand. As they say, less than 50 years have passed since a major cosmetic brand came to our country. But we were not interested in the fact that the company will develop in our country. Onliner.by spoke with Stepan Govorov, director of the company's international branch in Belarus, who came to Minsk from Moscow, about his career in direct sales, people's attitudes towards network marketing and the specifics of the Belarusian sales market.

- Before that, I worked in the Russian branch for 18 years. I started as an ordinary warehouse worker in 1996. I saw an advertisement in the newspaper that workers were needed for a foreign company. At that time I did not understand what direct sales were. I went through two interviews and got accepted. During these years, the economy in the country was unstable, so I perceived this job as temporary. I was sure that I would stay for two or three months and leave, because I wanted more serious work. The warehouse was on the other side of the city from my house, and it took me an hour and a half to get to work. By Minsk standards, this is a lot, but not by Moscow standards. Then I was 23 years old. My job was to receive and calculate the products that came to the warehouse, their placement and packaging,- says Stepan. - But everything has changed, largely due to the relationship in the team. Colleagues helped me to start learning something new. Then computer technologies were just appearing, but I didn’t have any computer skills, I began to study. Seeing interest, colleagues began to help me learn new technologies. I was then transferred to the delivery department, where I coordinated the delivery of orders to independent beauty consultants. I have gone through many career steps in different fields. So he gradually rose to the director of warehouse logistics, and then to the director of regional development.

Every three to five years something changed in Stepan's career, he was transferred and promoted. And every time the work was something new for him. Higher economic education, which he received at the Perm State Technical University, was very useful to him.

- We had a long preparatory process for opening a branch in Minsk. I was offered to do this, because I already had experience in opening branches in Russia and Armenia.

- Really long. The Mary Kay brand was known in Belarus 15-17 years ago…

- Like any large company, when it enters a new market, we first of all assessed the local potential. Today, the company operates in more than 35 countries, and there are more than 3 million independent beauty consultants. To open a branch, it was necessary to do a lot of preparatory work: find resources, find a place, collect and sign all the documents - and this is not a quick process. I will not say that at the preparation stage we encountered some difficulties. The only thing I would like to note is that we did not expect such support from the potential partners with whom I met in Minsk. I met very nice and sympathetic people, Stepan explains. - In general, there are services in the Belarusian sales market that are under development. For example, there are few companies that would provide a full package of services for the storage and processing of products, the market for courier delivery is narrow. Since we deliver products to our beauty consultants at home, so to speak, "from hand to hand", we are faced with situations that have already been resolved on the Russian market several years ago. Now transport and courier services have to change their structure, adapting to us. And the best part is that the management of these companies is interested in improving the quality of their services.

- And what is Mary Kay's plan in Belarus?

- Of course, as in any business, we have targets. And the first result surprised us: we got numbers an order of magnitude higher than expected. Therefore, we are now faced with the task of restructuring our internal processes in order to satisfy the volume that is on the Belarusian market.

- But you understand that in our country there are companies of the same kind. And not one, but already a dozen, probably, there will be. Yes, and we have our own cosmetic companies: Vitex, Belita, Modum…

- The more choices, the better. Abundance is better than no choice. I am for healthy competition.

- And why did the population of Belarus have a biased attitude towards network marketing? Have you thought about it?

- Perhaps because people confuse pyramid schemes and network marketing, in which it is not enough just to attract people, you need to create your own business. Because there are companies that pay remuneration for new customers, not paying attention to the volume of product sales.

Before proceeding with the opening of a branch, we conducted an analysis of the demand for a direct sales channel. And based on these results and the first month of work in Belarus, I can confidently say that there is no negative attitude towards network marketing and direct sales. We have a golden rule in the company: "Treat people the way you want to be treated." I believe that if you approach everything in life with such a rule, then you are doomed to success.

- How do you work in a women's company? After all, many believe that network marketing is not a business for men.

- The company employs both men and women. And they are professionals in their fields. Therefore, I would not say so clearly that this is a women's business. My task is to set up a management to support and help develop the business of independent beauty consultants. And no matter how pathetic it may sound, the company's mission is to improve the lives of women around the world. And making the decision to move to Minsk, I realized that I could improve the life of Belarusian women at least a little.

And in network marketing, you need to communicate, you need to be attentive to people, partners, customers. When I realized all this, I stopped "soaring" about the small number of our brother in network marketing.

And on the other hand, I began to admire women in MLM. She is a woman, and a mother, and a housewife, and works at the “main” job for the time being, and also builds a business in network marketing in order to get rid of the household routine, to improve herself, in order to get on her feet, since “he” is lying on the couch. To achieve something worthwhile in this life!

Our women can do everything! Of course, I would like a woman not to be everything that one has to be, but to be a woman. But MLM women can do anything and still manage to remain women!

And the average men, brought up in the “master-slave” system, prefer not to carry such a burden.

Male network leader

The work to attract men to network marketing in the CIS countries has a number of features. Men are very vulnerable to failure. They are practically unbeatable. In the wild, the losing male is deprived of all benefits and privileges, and the winner gets everything. In network marketing, the most traumatic period for the psyche of a distributor is the starting one. Lots of rejections. Each failure is an injury for a beginner. A man can quit everything after the first failure! Women are more resilient creatures. Therefore, they can perform actions many times before the result. Among men, there are very few purposeful individuals who are able to get up after a defeat and learn from it. And getting drunk (traditionally male reaction) in case of failure is easier than looking for a way out of the current situation. Therefore, many women - network leaders are trying to create for their beloved men who are capable of mental development, but not able to overcome the starting difficulties (weak psychological stability) most favored nation treatment in network marketing.

Most of the men - the leaders of our industry, 80 percent, got into business precisely through the "painless entry into MLM program." Recognizing the fact that MLM pays well, the beloved man of an established network leader - women begins to study the issue, speak at schools, make a feasible contribution to the success of the already family business. Would this "star" top leader on the scene be such if he started from scratch on his own without the powerful support of his wife? Big question! But the deed is done - the percentage of men in the network is growing, and the man - the top leader, who has a large network check, is used by propaganda to attract other representatives of the stronger sex to the business. And often it works!

True, this approach, although it saves a man's time in moving towards the goal, creates a number of failures in the preparation of such a male leader. Knowing how to work with a client only from books by American authors and not having his own experience as a distributor, such a top leader who, thanks to his wife, skipped many initial stages of a network career, objectively cannot understand the difficulties of his network distributors. Sometimes I had to be amazed at the advice of such "tops" that they distribute to their distributors of the starting stages! But out of respect for his level, this advice is appreciated, despite the lack of common sense in them. I was struck by some men - top leaders from this category. Gathering huge halls, basking in the delights of adoring distributors, in dealing with leaders of equal level, they disdained retail sales and those people who run around selling their company's products. For me it was crazy! These people, gentlemen, top leaders, create the foundation for your high remuneration! How can you not understand such elementary things? Looking through the online track record of such male leaders disparaging MLM start-up jobs, I found the reason for this neglect. Their beloved women, who have been going to the top of their careers for years, who have developed the skills of effective business management, who endured humiliation from loved ones just when it was hard for them, having reached a high level of skill, artificially raised their men to leadership positions. They protected the psyche of their loved ones from the disappointments of the initial period, transferring them, like on an airplane carpet, to the world of leaders. Men who have risen to leadership positions on their own will never express disdain for the work of an entry-level distributor. After all, they all went through with their own feet! But the computer program for calculating the remuneration of any company cannot take into account the peculiarities of the leader's path to the top of success. The turnover of the structure was created in the billing period by the leader on his own or with the support of his beloved woman, the computer does not care. Only now, a person who has worked out all the stages of development in network marketing on personal experience, logically, for a large structure would be more preferable than a leader created artificially, in a short time, like a broiler chicken. However, in life we ​​meet the opposite situation. Those male leaders whose networking wives spared the time to climb to the top of the ladder dominate the upper levels of networking careers, enjoying the rewards of high leadership status. Why? Yes, for one reason - DEFICIENCY!

When there are few men MLM - this is bad?

Almost all successful businesses have followed the path of creating and filling a deficit. It was the replenishment of the deficit that has always provided examples of the most successful business. Currently, men in network companies are in short supply.

In 1993, I commanded a separate unit in the Red Banner Northern Fleet. To serve in the headquarters of my unit, a young girl, the daughter of a high-ranking officer of the fleet headquarters, was appointed as a sailor. As a commander, I was not enthusiastic about such an appointment. In the navy, in a purely male team, women are in the same huge deficit as men are in MLM companies. This event did not affect the indicators of combat training in my unit. But the fact of the appearance of an interesting girl had a surprisingly positive effect on some aspects of military service. In the very first week of her service, the penalties imposed on the military personnel of the unit for an untidy appearance practically ceased. Officers, midshipmen and sailors, without additional reminders from their commanders, tried once again to iron their trousers and thoroughly clean their shoes, for example.

It is logical to assume that the appearance of a man in the women's team should cause approximately the same psychological effect. But will it cause an increase in trade? Most likely no. That is, the assumption that the more men in the number of distributors, the higher the economic performance of an MLM company is most likely a hypothesis. We sometimes really want to pass off what we want as real!

When I was an ordinary distributor, I noticed that female clients ordered cosmetics from me much more often than from female distributors, who were much better versed in this cosmetics. With a shortage of male energy, most likely, it is more pleasant for women to order cosmetic products from men (buying male attention along with a jar of cream) than from a woman (who is a competitor in the struggle for this male attention). And when a female distributor chooses a sponsor, who is preferable for her: a spectacular business woman or a man who will devote time to her, based on his functional duties as a sponsor?

Business on weaknesses

It is a sin not to use certain competitive advantages. And many competent distributors take into account the weaknesses of the opposite side in their work. My first MLM sponsor was a woman with huge personal sales volumes. There were a lot of men among her clients. Since the majority of my group's distributors were women and many had very difficult sales issues for the company's products, in order to improve the business performance of my network, I asked the sponsor to conduct a seminar on "How to effectively sell to men" with the women in my group.

As a leader, I attended this lesson.

What I heard delighted women, and shocked me. My sponsor told me how to attract the sexual attention of men by taking certain positions during a conversation, exposing the knee (you must have expensive tights for this case), unbuttoning the top button of your blouse, as well as a host of other tricks so that the attention of a male client is transferred to the mainstream. buying a product, and it is important not to let the conversation go into the realm of sexual claims. By the end of the seminar, I had the feeling that we men are poorly developed individuals whose behavior does not differ from the reaction of the natives to glass beads.

This proves once again that any weakness can be used to achieve a result if a solution is sought.

If a woman needs to work in the mode of a racehorse in order to successfully move up the career ladder, then men in MLM now have - most favored nation treatment.
